Church History
Burkville Memorial United Methodist Church
In 1834 a church was built is Burkville, Alabama as part of the Methodist Episcopal Union. Later it became Burkville Memorial United Methodist Church.
Church Services were held on the 5th Sunday, with Sunday School each Sunday. Later services were held on every 4th Sunday, and still later, every Sunday with a Lay Speaker. The tradition of dinner on the 5th Sunday was begun and continues today. In the 1950's, a Sunday School and Activity building was built, and soon after, a cemetery was started on the original grounds.
In 1982, G.E. started buying the surrounding property for their new plant. They bought the old church property, but left the church building which is still in good condition, and the cemetery is still in use.
The new church building was built on Highway 80, and we moved in on May 19, 1985. We now have 111 members, most of whom are very dedicated to reaching out to others. Our Clothes Closet and Food Pantry for the needy are a blessing to the community. We have a group that goes almost every Sunday afternoon to nursing homes to sing for the shut-ins. During the Christmas and Easter seasons we have a "Sock and Mitten" Tree for people in the Appalachians. Our men help the elderly and needy on Saturdays with painting, yard work, and various repairs. The ladies stay bust with numerous projects. We have a group who, for the past several years, has volunteered to help the children at Catoma School with their reading. Our choir has grown and now has a Christmas and Easter cantata.
Burkville is a church with an unfinished story; one whose vision is to seek God. We are blessed and praise God together in the name of Jesus. Here's hoping you will be a part of the unfinished story!
